The Komodo dragon (Varanus komodoensis) is the largest living lizard on Earth, and it is easy to see why many people describe it as a “living dinosaur.” Its ancient appearance, massive size, and apex predator status immediately evoke images of a prehistoric world.

Prehistoric Appearance: With a length of up to 3 meters (10 feet) and a weight of around 70 to 90 kg, their sheer size mirrors that of smaller theropod dinosaurs. Their bodies are covered in rugged, chainmail-like scales reinforced with tiny bones called osteoderms, giving them a natural armor that looks straight out of the Jurassic period.

Apex Predators: Just like the fearsome carnivorous dinosaurs, Komodo dragons rule their ecosystem. They hunt large prey like deer and water buffalo using stealth, powerful jaws, and a specialized venom that prevents blood clotting, causing their prey to bleed out.

The Evolutionary Truth: While they look like dinosaurs, scientifically speaking, they are not. Dinosaurs had a straight-legged stance where their limbs were directly beneath their bodies (much like modern birds and mammals). In contrast, Komodo dragons have a sprawling posture with limbs out to the side, characteristic of lizards.
The Komodo dragon belongs to the Varanidae family (monitor lizards), which evolved millions of years after the non-avian dinosaurs went extinct. Therefore, while they are not actual dinosaurs, they are the closest thing we have to a living, breathing prehistoric monster roaming our planet today.
